The eight factors, in order of weight

Varna (1 point) checks a basic spiritual/temperament compatibility from Moon sign. Vashya (2 points) checks mutual attraction/control dynamics. Tara (3 points) checks birth-star compatibility for general wellbeing. Yoni (4 points) checks physical and intimate compatibility via a symbolic animal system. Graha Maitri (5 points) checks whether the two Moon-sign lords are natural friends — often considered the most important for long-term mental compatibility.

Gana (6 points) checks temperament type (deva/manushya/rakshasa). Bhakoot (7 points) checks the houses the two Moons fall in relative to each other, tied to family and financial harmony. Nadi (8 points) checks health and progeny compatibility, and carries a hard veto: a Nadi dosha (0/8) is treated as serious regardless of the other seven scores.

What actually counts as a 'good' score

Classical texts generally treat 18 out of 36 as the minimum acceptable threshold, with 24+ considered good and 32+ considered excellent. But the total number alone is a shortcut — two couples can both score 22/36 with completely different profiles, one weak in Bhakoot (family harmony) and strong everywhere else, another the reverse. A real reading looks at WHICH factors are weak, not just the sum.

This is also why Nadi and Bhakoot dosha specifically get flagged separately even when the overall score looks fine — a 30/36 total with a Nadi dosha present is treated very differently from a 30/36 with no doshas at all.
