Significance
Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, falls on the tenth day (Dashami) of the bright half of Ashwin, immediately after Navratri. It marks two victories at once: Lord Rama's defeat of the demon king Ravana, and Goddess Durga's defeat of the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Effigies of Ravana are burned across North India, and the day is broadly considered auspicious for starting new ventures precisely because it commemorates a decisive victory.
