Main Entrance & Front Door
The main entrance should be planned with the same care as the rest of the house, because Vastu looks at the entrance as part of the overall layout of the building and its compatibility with the plot, roads, and surroundings. The guidance is not only about the door itself, but also about how the entrance sits in relation to the directions, the shape and slope of the land, and the space left around the house. For the plot, square or rectangular land is regarded as most beneficial. A slope down toward the East is considered auspicious for prosperity, while land sloping down toward the West or South is given least preference. Deserts, barren land, and swampy land are said to hinder progress. So, before deciding the front door, the surrounding land conditions should already be suitable. In directional planning, the eight directions are important: North, South, East, West, and the four diagonals. Vastu also says that some free space should be left in the direction concerned with the Lord of that zone. This means the entrance should not be planned in isolation, but as part of the house’s directional balance. The entrance must also fit with the rest of the interior and exterior layout. Doors and windows, like all other units of the house, should be mutually compatible and aligned with the position and properties of the plot. The same applies to nearby roads and highways. In short, a well-placed front door is one that matches the plot, the direction, and the overall house plan together.

Kitchen
The kitchen is best placed in the southeast, and east is the natural alternative if the southeast is not possible. In homes that open to the east or south, it may be difficult to build the kitchen in the southeast corner; in such cases, the northwest is the next recommended direction. If the kitchen has to be in the northeast or west, there may be compulsions, but the arrangement inside the kitchen becomes especially important. The kitchen slab should preferably run along the southeast wall or the east wall. If the kitchen is placed in the northeast or west, keep the gas-stove or main cooking fire in the southeast or east corner of the kitchen. The northeast corner is better used for water storage vessels. Do not keep the worship corner in the southeast, or near, above, or below the sink or gas-stove/cylinder. Also avoid constructing the kitchen in front of a bathroom, toilet, bedroom, makeup room, or worship room. The cooking area should not be below a window or in front of a door or outlet. The cook should not face the doors while cooking, and no one should be able to see the cooking process from outside. Keep the gas-stove away from the sink and refrigerator, and do not place it directly in front of water storage vessels. Gas cylinders should be protected from heat and fire, with the knob properly closed when not in use. If cooking faces east, that is preferred; facing south while cooking is the second choice.

Bedroom
For a bedroom, the most suitable directions are generally South and Southwest. If more than one bedroom is needed, a good combination is one in the South and the other in the Northwest. If necessary, the space between West and Southwest, or with somewhat less positive effect, between West and Northwest or Northwest and North may also be used. The East, North, Southeast and Northeast are considered unsuitable for a bedroom. The master bedroom is best kept in the South or Southwest corner of the house. The bedroom for children or younger members may be placed east or north of this room. For grown-up girls in the family, Northwest is suggested. For newly married younger couples, the space between North and Northwest is considered suitable. Guest rooms may be kept toward the North, or Northwest if there is free space available. The Northeast is regarded as a prayer-oriented direction, so a bedroom there is not preferred. If you have no choice and must use that room, it is better suited to younger members, especially school or college-going children. In that case, the bed should be placed in the South of the room, and the head should lie toward South or East. An East bedroom used continuously, especially by elders, is said to affect health and mood. A Southeast bedroom is also not preferred, as it may disturb mental calm and family peace. If unavoidable, it may be used with a partition, or for young girls who are not short-tempered. A South bedroom, by contrast, is described as the best choice for rest, freshness and overall comfort.

Pooja Room / Prayer Room
A pooja room or prayer corner should be kept simple, clean, and limited to one place of worship in the house. The reference guidance says this single focus helps create a holy atmosphere that supports peace, harmony, and love among family members. Keep the number of idols and pictures to the minimum, ideally just one, so the space remains for reverence rather than decoration. If possible, place the idol or picture in the north-east corner of the house or of a room. In a two-room flat, this may be done in the north-east corner with support from a stand or directly on the wall in that direction. The worship spot should not take up excessive space; in a small room, it may be only enough for one person to sit for devotion at a time. If a north-east corner is not available, it is suitable to keep the deity facing west so that the devotee faces east while praying. Facing east is said to help rapid progress in mental concentration and is especially significant for Gayatri Meditation. The north-east direction should be kept clean and pure. Avoid placing heavy items such as an almirah or table there, and do not keep a broomstick or sanitary items in that corner. If it is not used for worship, it may be left clean and empty. Dirt and debris in this direction are said to invite difficulties, losses, and tension in family relationships. At the same time, the guidance notes that Vastu is secondary to inner strength and sincere effort, so there is no need to panic if every point cannot be followed.

Study Room / Home Office
A study room or home office is best placed in the west, or in the portion between the southwest and the west directions. The reference text specifically identifies this zone as suitable for a study room, so this placement is the grounded choice to follow. Since Vastu Shastra works with directions, the idea is to plan the room according to the direction that is meant for that purpose, rather than placing it anywhere and hoping for the best. The text also notes that the different rooms, doors and windows should be planned with the auspicious and inauspicious directions in mind. For a homeowner, this means keeping the study or office in the west-side sector instead of using it for another function that belongs elsewhere in the house plan. Do keep the room dedicated to study, reading, writing, or office work. Avoid assigning this west or southwest-west zone to a completely different primary use if your intention is to follow the Vastu layout described in the reference. The broader message in the material is that wise use of Vastu principles helps make the home more supportive, peaceful, and orderly. Even in an existing house, careful room placement can still make a difference. So if you are planning a study room or home office, the west or southwest-to-west portion is the location the text points to as the right choice.

Living Room
A living room should be arranged so that it naturally encourages cooperation and sociability. Vastu says the inner settings of each room should suit its purpose, and the living room is meant to create a pleasant social atmosphere rather than a cluttered one. Keep the room free from unnecessary furniture and decorative pieces. Proper ventilation, fresh air, and sunlight are important, since the overall arrangement of a home should support a healthy and comfortable feel. The reference material also notes that the mind should be attuned according to the function of the room, and for the living room that means a welcoming, cooperative mood. Where furniture and furnishings are placed in any room should follow the general principle given here: heavier items should be arranged toward the west or south, while lighter items may be kept toward the east or north. This helps keep the room balanced and practical. If the living room is part of a home where storage is also being planned nearby, remember the broader Vastu advice given in the reference: empty containers should not be kept in the northwest, and the room should not be overloaded with items that do not belong there. A simple, open layout is preferred. Overall, the living room should feel airy, orderly, and peaceful. Its arrangement should support friendly interaction, not distraction or congestion.

Bathroom & Toilet
Bathrooms and toilets are often squeezed into whatever space is left in a house, especially in attached bedroom layouts and multistoried buildings with fixed water and drainage lines. Even so, where possible, Vastu recommends avoiding the Northeast and Southwest corners for bathrooms. They should also not be built beneath a staircase or in the central portion of the house. Keep the bathroom and toilet away from the kitchen and dining room. Since kitchen and bathroom are treated as opposite in nature, they should not face each other. If there is space to plan the interior, arrange things so that you face East while bathing. The tap used for bathing should be on the East side for this purpose. If a toilet must be attached inside the bathroom because of space limits, place it in the Southwest or Northwest corner of the bathroom. It should not be constructed near the bathroom in the East direction. When the existing structure does not allow major changes, even smaller adjustments such as shifting ventilators, taps, or other fittings can help improve the setup. A bathroom should ideally have only one door, with windows or ventilators in the East. If an exhaust fan is necessary, it should be fixed in the eastern or northern direction. Geysers and other electrical appliances are recommended in the Southeast corner. Facing East while bathing is said to create a soothing effect on the mind-body system.

Staircase
For staircase placement, the most suitable locations are the South West and South. Stairs can also be constructed in the West and South East. These locations are considered comparatively better for the home’s energy and progress. Avoid placing a staircase in the North West and North, as it is said to have a bad effect on business. The worst locations are the center, North East, and East. A staircase in the center is described as dangerous and harmful for overall prosperity, health, and family growth. North East is linked with insolvency, physical and mental illness, and neurological problems. East is said to affect social status, health, and education. A few practical points are mentioned for stairs. Do not create a store, toilet, puja space, or similar use under the staircase. The staircase should be clockwise. If an anti-clockwise staircase already exists, the reference suggests covering the stair hands with a green money plant as a remedy. The count of risers should be odd. Keep in mind that toilets are mentioned as suitable only in the South and West. Since stairs, toilets, main doors, and entrances all influence progress and related outcomes, their placement should be considered carefully together.

Yantra Remedies for Vastu Corrections
Yantra-based Vastu corrections are used when a directional defect cannot be corrected in a physical way. In the northeast, the main corrective yantra mentioned is the Jupiter Yantra. It is applied directly at the place where the defect occurs. If the defect affects a room, place the yantra over that room’s door. If a window is affected, fix it to the window. This is suggested for problems such as a toilet, kitchen, heavy objects, garbage, darkness, a cut-off northeast, or a northeast that is blocked, higher than the other directions, or without windows or veranda. Fasting till the evening on Thursdays is given as another possible correction when these defects cannot be removed in any other way. The northeast should be kept clear, tidy, light, and open. If it is neglected or blocked, the text says this can also affect Ketu, leading to effects such as depression, isolation, lack of self-confidence, and chaos. In such cases, a Ketu Yantra may also be used to influence the subtle plane. For protection, the Narasimha Raskana Yantra is described as an especially effective universal protection yantra. It is not limited to the south; it may also be applied in other directions where special protection is desired, such as the entrance or the sleeping area. There is also the Vasati Direction Yantra, used in places where there are defects of direction, meaning things are at the wrong place according to Vastu. It combines geometric elements, symbols, mantras, and colors. When mounted horizontally, the head of the Vastu Purusha should point toward the northeast; when mounted vertically on a wall, the head should point to the left.
